Important October 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

October brings a few critical tax deadlines for individuals that you will want to keep on your radar. Whether you are finalizing your extended 2025 income tax return or navigating foreign financial account reporting, staying organized this month is essential.

For those receiving tip income, October also comes with specific monthly reporting requirements. The team at Christiansen Accounting in California wants to ensure you have the exact dates and details you need to stay compliant.

Tax documentation and planning

October 13: Reporting September Tips to Your Employer

If you are an employee who works for tips and you received more than $20 in tips during the month of September, you are required to report them to your employer no later than October 13. You can use IRS Form 4070 to do this, or you can provide your own written statement. If you use your own statement, it must include your signature, name, address, Social Security number, your employer’s name (or the establishment’s name if different), the month or period the report covers, and the total tips you received during that time.

Your employer is required to withhold FICA taxes and income tax withholding for these tips directly from your regular wages. If your regular wages are insufficient to cover the FICA and tax withholding, the employer will report the amount of the uncollected withholding in box 8 of your W-2 for the year. You will then be required to pay that uncollected withholding when your return for the year is filed.

October 15: Extended 2025 Individual Tax Returns

If you requested an automatic 6-month extension to file your income tax return for 2025, October 15 is the deadline to file Form 1040. You will also need to pay any tax, interest, and penalties that are due.

October 15: Foreign Financial Account Reporting

If you received an automatic 6-month extension of time to report your 2025 foreign financial accounts to the Department of the Treasury, October 15 is also the due date for Form FinCEN 114.

Weekends, Holidays, and Disaster Area Extensions

If a due date happens to fall on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, that deadline is automatically extended until the next business day that is not itself a legal holiday.

Please note that when a geographical area is designated as a disaster area, due dates will be extended. For more information on whether an area has been designated a disaster area and to find the applicable filing extension dates, visit the following websites:

Stay on Track With Your Tax Filing Deadlines

Meeting these October due dates keeps your tax situation in good standing and helps prevent unnecessary penalties. If you need assistance finalizing your extended 2025 return or understanding your tip reporting obligations, we can help.
