Where’s My Money? How to Track Your Federal Tax Refund

Once the tax return is signed and filed, the question on almost every client’s mind is the same: “When will the funds hit my account?”

As we navigate the 2026 tax season here at Christiansen Accounting, you may have noticed the IRS shifting further away from paper checks. This isn't just about saving trees; it’s a security measure designed to stop mail theft and fraud while getting money into your hands faster. Whether you receive your refund via direct deposit, a prepaid debit card, or are one of the few still receiving a paper check, the process for tracking that money has become much more transparent.

The Fastest Way to Check Your Status

If you have already filed your federal return and are expecting a refund, you don’t need to guess where it is. The most reliable method is the Where’s My Refund? tool on the IRS website.

This interactive tracker provides access to your refund status nearly 24/7. Whether you split your refund across multiple savings accounts or sent it all to one checking account, this is your central hub for information. It typically displays status updates 24 hours after the IRS receives an e-filed return, or about four weeks after you mail a paper return.

What You Need to Log In

Security is tight, so you can’t just type in your name. Before you go online to check, grab a copy of your filed federal tax return. You will need to enter the following specific details to access your dashboard:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The tax year involved (currently options include 2025, 2024, and 2023),

  • Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household, etc.), and

  • The exact refund amount shown on your return.

Understanding Your Status

Once logged in, the tool will display one of three stages:

  • Return Received: The IRS has your return and is processing it.

  • Refund Approved: They have finished processing and are scheduling the payment.

  • Refund Sent: The money is on its way to your bank or the check is in the mail. (Note: Allow 5 days for bank processing or several weeks for mail delivery).

For most taxpayers using e-file and direct deposit, the turnaround is efficient—nine out of 10 refunds are issued in fewer than 21 days.

Mobile Options and Accessibility

Prefer to check from your phone? The IRS2Go mobile app is free and available for both Apple and Android devices. It offers the same tracking capabilities as the desktop version.

The IRS has also ensured accessibility for all taxpayers. The Where’s My Refund? tool is compatible with the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) screen reader and works with Braille displays.

When Should You Call?

We know waiting can be stressful, but patience is key. The Where’s My Refund? system is updated once every 24 hours, usually overnight, so checking multiple times a day won't change the status. Generally, you should not call the IRS unless the tool specifically directs you to do so.

However, if the tracker indicates a delay longer than 28 days, or if you encounter a confusing error message, please reach out to us at Christiansen Accounting. We can help you interpret the issue and determine the next steps.
