August 2026 Business Tax Due Dates: Payroll & Compliance Deadlines

As we head into the late summer months, many small business owners in Connecticut and across the country are focused on keeping operations running smoothly or squeezing in a final vacation. But while August might feel like a quiet month for taxes compared to the spring rush, there are still critical compliance dates you cannot afford to miss. At CPA Consulting Services, we frequently see businesses accidentally slip up on mid-year payroll tax deposits and quarterly filings. Missing these due dates can trigger steep penalties and unnecessary IRS debt—an issue we resolve for our clients nationwide. To help you stay on track, we have outlined the most important federal tax deadlines for businesses this August 2026.

August 10: The Form 941 Grace Period

For most employers, the standard deadline to file Form 941 for the second quarter of 2026 was July 31. However, the IRS offers a helpful ten-day grace period for businesses that stay meticulously on top of their cash flow. If you made all your Q2 payroll tax deposits in full and on time, your filing deadline is automatically extended to August 10, 2026. Form 941 is essential because it reports the income taxes, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax withheld from your employees' paychecks, along with the employer's matching portion.

We advise our S-Corporation and self-employed clients to prioritize timely payroll deposits. Falling behind on payroll taxes can quickly lead to aggressive IRS collection actions. By keeping your bookkeeping organized and automating deposits, you earn this extra breathing room to file paperwork without the stress of looming penalties.

August 17: Monthly Payroll and Nonpayroll Deposits

You might wonder why a mid-month deadline falls on the 17th instead of the traditional 15th. This highlights a fundamental IRS protocol regarding weekends and holidays: whenever a standard federal tax due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically pushed to the next business day. Because August 15, 2026, is a Saturday, business owners have until Monday, August 17, to manage their monthly deposit requirements.

If your business operates under the monthly deposit rule, you must deposit the Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes accumulated from July payrolls. Additionally, this deadline applies to nonpayroll withholding. Businesses withholding taxes on items like gambling winnings, pensions, or backup withholding must also make their July deposits by August 17. Whether you are a defense contractor managing fluctuating payrolls or a traditional small business, keeping up with these deposits is a cornerstone of sound financial health.

Navigating the Unexpected: Disaster Area Extensions

Life does not always go according to plan, and severe weather can disrupt even the most organized operations. When a geographical region is federally recognized as a disaster area, the IRS routinely steps in to offer administrative relief. This typically includes pushing back filing and payment due dates.

Led by Gene Turley, CPA, our firm works with tax resolution clients in all 50 states, and we closely monitor these federal declarations. If your operations or tax records are located in a covered disaster area, you may automatically qualify for extended deadlines.
