Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As the new year begins, so do crucial tax filing deadlines for individuals. January 2026 is a pivotal month for estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and effective tax strategy planning. Start reviewing these important dates now to ensure you're prepared.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Preparation Appointment

January 12 - Tip Reporting Deadline

For employees receiving tips, those who earned more than $20 in tips during December must report these to their employer by January 12. Use IRS Form 4070 or another signed document providing your personal and employment details along with total tips for the period. Ensure these tips are accurately reported so your employer can withhold the correct FICA and income tax amounts.

Your regular wages may be insufficient for all FICA and tax withholdings. In such cases, your employer will note uncollected amounts in box 8 of your W-2 for the year, which you'll need to cover when filing your return.Image 1

January 15 - Final Estimated Tax Payment for 2025

January 15 is the deadline to make your last estimated tax payment for the 2025 fiscal year. Missing this deadline means you must file and pay your 2025 tax return by February 2, 2026, to potentially avoid penalties. Our experienced CPA team can assist in keeping you aligned with these requirements.

Handling Delays: Weekends, Holidays, and Disasters

If a deadline dates falls during the weekend or on a holiday, the due date extends to the next business day. Additionally, tax deadlines might be extended for those in officially declared disaster areas. Updated information about such extensions can be found on FEMA's site: FEMA Disaster Declarations or checked with the IRS's announcements: IRS Disaster Tax Relief.Image 2
