2026 Tax Changes: Updating Your Charitable Contributions

Navigating 2026 Charitable Deduction Rules

Starting in 2026, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 2021 (OBBBA) brings critical updates to how charitable contributions are deducted. For taxpayers who itemize, a new contribution floor takes effect. You will only be able to deduct charitable giving that exceeds 0.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). This adjustment may limit the tax advantages of smaller, routine donations.

Relief for Non-Itemizers

If you take the standard deduction, the OBBBA offers a specific benefit. Non-itemizers can claim a deduction for cash contributions up to $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for joint filers.
