Tracking Your Federal Refund: A Guide for Quincy Taxpayers

Once the tax returns are signed and filed, the question on almost everyone’s mind—whether you are a small business owner in Quincy or a real estate investor in Greater Boston—is the same: When will the funds hit my account?

To improve security and speed, the IRS has largely moved away from paper checks, encouraging electronic transfers instead. This shift significantly lowers the risk of mail theft and cuts down on the costs associated with printing and postage. For those without traditional bank accounts, options like prepaid debit cards are now standard alternatives.

Regardless of how you choose to receive your money, you don't have to stay in the dark. If you are due a refund, you can monitor its progress easily online.

Using the Official IRS Tracker

The most reliable way to check your status is the Where’s My Refund? tool on the IRS website. Whether your refund is being deposited into a single operating account or split across several savings accounts, this interactive system provides updates nearly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For clients who e-file (which we highly recommend for speed and accuracy), refund data typically appears 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. If you filed a paper return, you will unfortunately need to wait about four weeks before the system updates. Statistically, nine out of 10 taxpayers using e-file with direct deposit see their refunds within 21 days.

Required Information

Before logging in, make sure you have a copy of your federal tax return in front of you. As your local IRS Enrolled Agent, I often remind clients that accuracy here is key. You will need to enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The specific tax year (options currently include 2025, 2024, and 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., Single, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household), and

  • The exact refund amount in whole dollars as shown on your return.

Understanding Your Status

Once your data is verified, the tool will display one of three stages:

  • Received: The IRS has your return and is processing it.

  • Approved: The processing is complete, and a release date for your funds has been set.

  • Sent: The money is on its way to your bank or a check has been mailed. (Note: Allow up to 5 days for bank processing or several weeks for mail delivery).

The tool also offers solutions for stalled refunds. For instance, if your refund is missing more than 28 days after the mailing date listed in the system, you can initiate a refund trace directly through the site.

Accessibility and Mobile Options

For taxpayers who are visually impaired, the Where’s My Refund? tool is fully compatible with the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) screen reader and refreshable Braille displays.

Prefer to check on the go? You can download IRS2Go, the official IRS mobile app. It is available for both Apple and Android devices and pulls the same data as the website.

When Should You Call?

We know that waiting on capital—whether for payroll, reinvestment, or personal savings—can be stressful. However, the Where’s My Refund? tool is updated only once every 24 hours, usually overnight. Checking multiple times a day won't change the result, and calling the IRS is generally unnecessary unless the tool specifically directs you to do so.

If you encounter persistent issues or the numbers don't match your records, please contact our Quincy office. As your tax preparation partners, we are here to help resolve discrepancies and keep your financial life moving forward.
